Election of 1800
John Adams v. Thomas Jefferson/president v. Vice President
- two candidates had 73 electoral votes:Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr
- the election was decided by the House of Representatives
Louisiana Purchase

- it doubled the size of the US
- some Federalists threatened to leave the union over the purchase
Lewis and Clark expedition
They followed the Missouri River on a trip to the Pacific Ocean
-this inspired people to move west
Impressment and attack of the Cheasapeake
- the British impressed/ made them serve in the British navy, thousands of native US citizens
- The US ship the Cheasapeake was intercepted by a British vessel demanding to search for his dissenters
- the captain refused, so the British commander attacked
War Hawks from the War of 1812

- Dolley Madison saved portrait of George Washington
- the British attacked fort McHenry
- battle of New Orleans happened after the treaty was signed
- this battle was decisive victory for the US; made Andrew Jackson a household name

Monroe Doctrine
-the Western Hemisphere was no longer open for civilization
Was a sign to European nations to keep out of the Americas
-it became a big part of the American foreign policy instantly

- after Corrupt Bargain the democratic Republican Party splits up

Spoils System-practice of replacing government employees with winning candidate supporters
-Jackson wanted destroy the national bank and give the money to the smaller ones

-Winfield Scott and Army of 7000 federal troops came to remove Cherokee from there homes
