Final Flashcards

1
Q

What are some reasons that Christ gave for abandoning materialism?

A

All earthly treasures are temporal and transient. Heavenly treasures cannot be taken away or destroyed.

There is a promise for eschatological reward–a reward we will have in heaven.

a bad eye refers to miserly spirit, while a find eye refers to generosity. darkness denotes moral blindness and internal corruption.

Q

What are some reasons that Christ gave for abandoning worry?

A

Worry is ineffective, based on a diminished view of God, reflects warped priorities, focuses more on the potential than the actual, focus a lot on material things (such as money)

God has all power and knowledge and love and you can be sure He will meet your needs. Worry can be an expression of doubt – we cannot doubt God’s power and ability to provide for us well

Q

Did Jesus prohibit all acts of judgment or only a certain kind of judgment?

A

he prohibited hypocritical judgment and told people to get the log (in greek “beam”) out of ones eye before looking to another.

He does not imply that we are never to judge others but rather condemns hypocritical judgment by using present tense, a accompanying illustration.

Q

What do the false prophet, false professor, and fool all have in common?

A

Disobedience and rebellion against Jesus’ authority. They hear Jesus’ words but do not do them–sinful rebellion is the connection. They hear, but do not do.

false prophet looks like a sheep, but they are wolves. their punishment is eternal, must use discernment knowing that not everyone who speaks the name of the Lord is actually committed to the Lord.
you will know them, false professors say Lord Lord but are not doing God’s will, false professors do miracles thinking that is the supernatural work of Christ when the job of Jesus is to change hearts. they never had a personal relationship with Jesus.
the fool hears Jesus’ words but does nto do them.

Q

How does the Sermon show that confession of Jesus’s deity is necessary for salvation? Is that confession alone sufficient for salvation?

A

Matthew 7 Sermon on the mount. not everyone who says Lord Lord will enter but that those who follow God. teaches that everyone must confess that he is lord, but that confession is not sufficient. show with your life that Jesus is Lord–do the will of the father and do not be characterized by rebellion.

Back story of the 2 gates and 2 roads is the one that leads to life. Jesus is the gatekeeper who can give life. The confession of Lord Lord is necessary but not sufficient on its own. It must also take action of turning from who they were and continue to follow Jesus .

mportant to understand the narrow versus the wide gate analogy. the masses of humanity will not follow the Lord, the only way to truly enter heaven is through using the narrow gate and trusting in Jesus alone for salvation.
Narrow road is morally restrictive – very narrow boundaries distinguishing between what is right and wrong. True disciples will live according to the ethics of the kingdom, they will live transformed lives!! Antinomianism – the idea that once we have been saved by grace the way we act doesn’t matter.

Q

What evidence shows that the parables of Jesus are true allegories (with multiple symbols teaching multiple truths) rather than similes (a simple analogy teaching just one truth)?

A

OT Parables were allegorical
Rabbinic parables were allegorical
Jesus’ interpretations of his own parables show that many of them were allegorical
Interpreters must recognize the distinction between the interpretation of allegory and the allegorical interpretation

Q

Explain the meaning of Jesus’s self-description “the Son of Man” based on its use in Aramaic Daniel, Greek Daniel, 1 Enoch, 4 Ezra, and the Talmud. What evidence in the Gospels confirms that the title expresses Jesus’s full deity?

A

Aramaic Daniel: coming on the clouds of heaven, a visible manifestation of the presence of God. people of every nation tribe an tongue shall serve Him and every other use of this în daniel speaks of worshiping deity. the relationship of the Son of man vision and the ancient of days vision asks who is the remaining throne for?

Greek Daniel: manuscript 967–figure came as the son of man and as the ancient of Days. the son of man figure is both fully man and fully divine.

1 enoch: the Son of ma is described as possessing the name so powerful it brought about everything. the name of the lord of spirits. the SOM bares the name of YHWH.

4 Ezra: son of man figure is a messianic deliverer but also one who proforms the deeds of YHWH.

Enoch and Ezra are important because they write during the time of Christ and help indicate that Jesus is the messiah.

the Talmud: interpreted Ancient of days vision with the empty throne was for Jesus, Acuba a Jewish Leader interpreted correctly but was charged for heresy.

Jesus describes himself as the son of man în contexts that allude to daniel 7 (trial of the sanhedrin “you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand..coming with the clouds of heaven”) Jesus is not only interpreting daniel 7 but is claiming he is the fulfillment of it. this is the same thing that Acuba gets charged for blasphemy and eventually put to death.

Q

What led to the strong post-Enlightenment skepticism to the Gospel accounts that resulted in the assumption that the “real Jesus” was very different from the Jesus portrayed by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John?

A

it was not a common messianic title back in Israel at the time and it was only used in the gospels and by Jesus when referring to himself.
Aramaic text of Daniel 7:9–14: a royal figure who rules over a universal and eternal kingdom. A figure of heavenly origin, a figure worthy of worship, one enthroned alongside the Ancient of Days as his co-regent
LXX - Oldest Greek manuscript of Daniel (MS 967) identifies the Son of Man with the Ancient of Days
Similitudes of Enoch: Son of Man is identified as the Messiah, Son of Man casts kings down from their thrones and is seated on a throne of glory as judge, Son of Man possesses the divine Name, The Son of Man is WORTHY to be glorified by all the hosts of heaven.

Q

What worldview is associated with this skepticism?

A

Mainly naturalism, but also atheism or monism.
lack of belief in the supernatural became a serious issue, therefore the gospels were either viewed as allegorical or legends that had a few random kernels of truth woven in. gospels were not considered historical eyewitness accounts anymore.

Q

How was Jesus’s approach to exorcism different from the Jewish exorcists of his day?

A

Exorcisms demonstrate Jesus’ absolute authority over the demonic world.
Matthew stresses that Jesus exorcizes by his mere word in apparent contrast to the Jewish exorcists. Matt 8:16-17
Healing demonstrates that the sacrifice of Christ removes the consequences of sin. (Isa 53)

Q

What was the verification that Jesus performed an exorcism compared with the “verifications” by Jewish exorcists of his day?

A

only one observance of Jewish exorcists în Josephus. he claims to have seen an exorcism where a leader took a magic ring and tries to get the demon out of a man by sticking the ring up the mans nose and pulling the demon out, where the demon then “bumps” a basin of water and proved that they were there. however, this is easily fudged and performed. when Jesus performs an exorcism, you don’t need spilling water to prove it, people change their lives and it is clear. he does not need a “magic ring.” we only find this kind of thing în the ministry of Jesus.

Q

How does Jesus’s stilling of the storm reveal his deity?

A

The disciples appeal “Lord save!” is consistently addressed to Yahweh in the OT
Jesus’ rebuke of the storm may allude to Psalm 18:15; 104:7; Isa 50:2; Nah 1:4
Jesus’ stilling of the waves recalls texts like Psalm 89:8-9
demonstrates Jesus’ ability to control the forces of nature
the disciples recognize that Jesus is something other than a normal human, he has increased power and authority. first whisper of an understanding of Jesus’s divinity

17
Q

How does the first miracle at Cana reveal Jesus’s deity and Messiahship?

A

act of creation
a miracle reminiscent of the deeds of Yahweh in the OT Exodus 7:19
Turning of the water to blood in Egypt.
A miracle that showed that Jesus was the Messiah Gen 49:10-12
blessing at the end of Gen. The wine will be abundant.
An act that showed that ritual cleansings of Judaism were now passed
side note: affirmed by the disciples, the first of Jesus’s public miracles.

18
Q

How does the feeding of the multitudes reveal Jesus’s deity and Messiahship?

A

Miraculous nature of the feeding
OT Reminiscences in the feeding
“he went up on the mountain”
provided bread and meat in the wilderness
John 6:31”he gave them bread from Heaven to eat.”
Fulfillment of Deut 18
prophet like moses.
Lesson of the feeding
The introduction of the chapter presents Jesus as the New Moses, the fulfillment of the Deuteronomy 18 promise
last words of ch 5 “moses wrote about me”
Like Moses he
lead a great throng of people
preformed signs and wonders
went up on the mountain
provided God’s people with a miraculous supply of food
response to the miracle is recognition that Jesus is “the prophet who is coming into the world”

19
Q

How does the healing of the man born blind reveal Jesus’s deity and Messiahship?

A

Granting sight to this man required a miracle of creation and not just a miracle of healing
Jesus demonstrated that symbolically that this was a miracle of creation by the means that he used to perform the miracle.
Jesus is creator and Son of Man
He is Yahweh Psalm 146:8 “the Lord opens the eyes of the blind”
He is Messiah Isa 35:5 “the the eyes of the blind shall be opened”
In order for the Lord Jesus to give this man sight, he needed to create for this man the components necessary for sight.
Throughout the OT clay is the material for human creation, Jesus did everything with intentionality.

20
Q

Explain the parabolic significance of the healing of the man born blind.

A

Jesus demonstrated the miracle had a meaning at a symbolic level by his words in 9:5, 39-41
All people are born spiritually blind
Only Jesus can grant them spiritual sight
Spiritual illumination requires being cleansed by the Sent One

21
Q

How does the resurrection of Lazarus reveal Jesus’s deity?

A

Jesus has supernatural knowledge
John 1. Nathaniel under the fig tree
2. knows the heart of people
4. knows the past of the woman at the well and the moment that a boy was healed
5. knows how long the paralytic had waited for healing
7. knows the secret conspiracy of the Jews to kill him
11 knows the outcome of Lazarus’ condition and the moment that Lazarus died
Supernatural power
Lazarus was dead.
Jews deemed resurrection after 4 days to be a theological impossibility as well as a medical impossibility
the resurrection of Lazarus confirmed Jesus’ identity as the Creator of humanity, Deity Incarnate
OT backing: Daniel 12:2/ Ezekiel 37:1-14/ Job 19:26-27

22
Q

How does Jesus’s washing of his disciples’ feet show his amazing condescension?

A

Jesus demonstrates radical love
a love that leads one to humble himself and condescend to offer radical services to others.
this was an act of a superior doing the work of an inferior, which would never have happened in 1st century Jerusalem

23
Q

How does Jesus’s washing of his disciples’ feet show the full extent of his love?

A

A love shown for those who are inferior
A love shown for one’s enemy
The irony of footwashing
-what hands performed the washing
-what feet received the washing

24
Q

How does Jesus’s washing of his disciples’ feet fulfill OT prophecy?

A

Zech 13:7
He is the Shepherd of God’s people who protected them
His death signals that God has removed his protection and will devastated Israel
Signals the opening of the fountain that will wash away sin and impurity
Jesus’ disciples need physical cleaning in order to prepare them for a meal
They had already received the complete spiritual cleaning that makes them presentable to God
Those who are not Jesus’ disciples are unclean and thus unworthy to approach God
PSalm 41:9 Judas is eating JEsus’ bread în the passover meal and has lifted up his heel against christ and the irony is Jesus is washing the very heel that is poised to crush him în an act of kindness calling Judas to repent.

25
Q

How does the Last Supper portray the full extent of our salvation including justification, sanctification, and glorification?

A

Justification: Bread. atoning work. He makes a connection between the meal they’re eating and His coming suffering. Sacrifice of the lamb by the Jews, in order to protect from the wrath of the destroyer. Rescues us from the divine wrath.
Sanctification: Cup. Initiates the spiritual exodus that delivers us from slavery to sin. The cup initiates a new covenant with the sacrifice. The covenant will be written on hearts, not stone. Implies personal transformation.
Glorification:the anticipation of the Great Messianic Feast. Fulfillment of “I will not eat this meal again until…” His glorious kingdom. The supper reminds us to look forward to Christ’s return.

26
Q

Describe the physical sufferings entailed in Jesus’s scourging and crucifixion.

A

Scourging or flogged – flagellum was a whip that had several leather straps that had bone, metal, glass on the ends
whip was designed to cut open skin and stick to the flesh so that when it was pulled away it would rip off the skin with it. Jesus was on death’s doorstep before even being nailed to the cross.
Crucifixion – “most wretched of all ways of dying” – josephus
Even the citizens of rome did not have the stomach for crucifixion
Nailed to the cross – spike through the ankles and hands, may even cut the legs off the victim once pulled down to have to get them off the cross, low cross allowed for birds, dogs, and even people to continue agonizing the victim
breaking of the legs very common to speed up death however Jesus avoided that because he was dead in only 6 hours (super fast). also, OT prophecy said that no bones in his body would be broken
The concoction filled with wine and myrrh was a painkiller of sorts that he did not take it was important for Jesus to experience the full pain and rejection of the father. in order for our sin to be fully covered Jesus needed to walk through all the agony of taking our sin upon himself.

27
Q

Describe the spiritual agony entailed in Jesus’s crucifixion.

A

Rejection, ridicule, betrayal – emotional suffering seen through the crown of thorns, wearing of purple cloak in mockery of kingship, reed given to him to see as king scepter

Abandoned by the father – quotes psalm 22 which describes the crucifixion of Jesus in vivid detail – he has been separated from God fully as He must suffer as the substitute for the wrath of God. in his moment of despair and suffering – he had to be severed from God
Cursed by God – 1 Corinthians, Paul recognizes he became a curse for us – he bore the curse that all men deserved for their sin – darkness is a picture (Deut. 28:28).
in Jesus’s moment of greatest suffering he called out to his father, and the father did not answer. we cannot comprehend the agony he must have felt during this time.
Cursed by God – Jesus became the curse that we deserve. Darkness at noon is a sign that the broken covenant has now descended on Jesus. We can NEVER doubt God’s love. This is a sign of the greatest love that has ever existed. We are not to measure God’s love by the present circumstances of life, we are to measure it by the cross.

28
Q

How does the NT affirm the deity of the suffering Savior?

A

directly pulled from Psalm 22
The casting of lots for Jesus’ clothes (Matt 27:35)) is direct quotation of 18
The sneering and shaking of heads (Matt 27:39) echoes 7
The mockery of Jesus’ confidence in God (Matt 27:43) is a direct quotation of 9
Jesus’ cry of dereliction (Matt 27:46) is a direct quotation of 2
Jesus’ crucifixion (Matt 27:26,31,35) recalls 16

29
Q

What is the significance of the phenomena that accompanied Jesus’s death?

A

Rending of the veil likely foreshadows the destruction of the temple
Earthquake, splitting of the rocks, the opening of the tombs, and resurrection of the dead signal the fulfillment of Ezekiel 37, Zechariah, Isaiah 26:19
Jesus’ death signals the dawn of the new covenant era, the restoration and ultimate resurrection of God’s people, and the one who leads God’s people in victory.
jesus died at the exact same time as all the Passover lambs

30
Q

What evidence from the Gospels disputes the “swoon theory”?

A

Although thousands of people were crucified by the Romans, we have no record of someone surviving uninterrupted crucifixion
Pilates surprise that Jesus death was so quick. The fact that Jesus could not carry his patibulum indicates that his scourging was unusually severe and this apparently hastened his death
the Romans were trained executioners who had likely conducted numerous crucifixions and recognized clear signs of death
confirmed death by piercing his side, clear sign of physical death
the disciples who handled His body after His death were confident He was dead
When Jesus reappeared, no early witness suggested that Jesus had merely revived. They were confident that Jesus had risen from the dead even though this was contrary to their expectations.

31
Q

What evidence from the Gospels disputes the “mistaken tomb” theory?

A

Jesus tomb was a new tomb with no other bodies, making it easy to distinguish from other tombs
this tomb had been visited by the women on the day of Jesus’ burial
this tomb was located very close to Golgotha
this tomb was identified by angels
the tomb contained abandoned graveclothes

32
Q

What evidence from the Gospels disputes the “stolen body” theory?

A

The penalty for a Roman solider who fell asleep at his post was execution. it is highly unlikely that any solider fell asleep
the custodia would have been a large enough detachment to set up a rotating watch and would have included enough soldiers to resist Jesus; known disciples
If the soldiers had truly been sleeping then they simply did not know what happened to Jesus’ body. They could not be sure that the body was stolen or, if stolen, who took it.

Matthew’s statement that the story circulated “among the Jews” may imply that a different story, closer to the truth, circulated among the Romans.

33
Q

How do Jesus’s post-resurrection appearances prove his bodily resurrection?

A

Matthew seems to indicate that Jesus’ body vacated the tomb before the stone was rolled away. Thus, his body was able to pass through material objects in the same manner that John describes
Yet, Jesus’ body is material since it is visible (Jn 28:9, 17) and tangible (jn 28:17)
THe lingering doubt of Jesus’ disciples (28:17) shows that the resurrection appearances were not mass hallucinations by gullible persons

Jesus’ appearance in the locked room demonstrates the special abilities of his resurrection body
the scars on his hands and side confirm the resurrected body is the same body that was crucified and buried
the joy of the disciples fulfills John 16:22
the exhaled breath and pronouncement recall Gen 2; Ezek 36; and fulfill the promise of the new covenant

34
Q

Explain the “Johannine Pentecost.”

A

OHN 20–different from Matthew account but not contradiction. Matthew is the outpouring of the spirit on the dead saints, the Johannine is the outpouring of the spirit on alive saints.
this outpouring is transforming the hearts and lives of Jesus’disciples–spiritual regeneration as a new creation.
What happens in Acts 20 is not purely symbolic.

35
Q

Is the fulfillment of the Great Commission casual or intentional? Why?

A

go and teach are clear commands
by not saying “as you go…” it is clear that the GC is an intentional command that requires Christians to intentionally share the gospel and not to be passive as our share the gospel.

36
Q

How does the Great Commission demonstrate that the deity of Christ is an essential feature of the gospel message?

A

the inclusio emphasizes Jesus’ identity as Immanuel
“all authority” signals that Jesus’ exaltation as Son of Man has occurred in conjunction with his death and resurrection
Jesus shared the Divine name of LORD with the father and spirit which makes it abundantly clear that he is God with us.

37
Q

What does the Great Commission imply about the nature of discipleship?

A

Baptism in the trinitarian formula is evidence of careful doctrinal instruction before baptism
Post-baptismal instruction focused more on behavior since pre-baptismal instruction focused more on belief
