Filter theory Flashcards
Who proposed the filter theory?
Kerchoff & Davis
What does filter theory concern itself with?
Filter theory concerns itself with the process of relationship formation and development
What was the research for filter theory? (Names too)
Kechoff & Davis compared attitudes and personalities of students couples in ST (-18m) and LT (+18m) relationships
What are the 3 filters for relationship development?
- Social demographics
- Similarities in attitudes
- Complementarity
What does social demographics concern itself with in the filter theory?
Accessibility, factors that influence the chance of meeting e.g. same social class. Those that are in similar context = more attractive and anyone different is discounted from this pool.
What does Complementarity concern itself with in the filter theory?
Whereby a partner complements their other in traits they lack, tends to be more attractive due to feelings of wholenesses.
More common in LT relationships
What does similarities in attitudes concern itself with in the filter theory?
Sharing core values and beliefs e.g. views on families, tend to be done very early on in a relationship = more self disclosure. Byrne refers to this as the law of attraction
What is the pool of availabilities narrowed down to in filter theory?
Pool of desirables
What is homogamy in the social demographic filter?
Similar cultures and social classes
