A model which shows the process of relationship breakup
What are the stages of Duck’s phase model?
- Intrapyschic
- Dyadic
- Social
- Grave dressing
What is the intrapsychic phase?
The dissatisfied partner has internal, private thoughts of why they are dissatisfied
What is the threshold for the intrapsychic phase?
‘I can’t stand it anymore’
What is the threshold for the dyadic stage?
‘I would be justified in withdrawing’
What happens in the dyadic stage?
Dissatisfactions are aired and shared, characterised by lack of equity and commitment, partners think of alternatives
What happens in the Social phase of the relationship break down model?
End of the breakup, families and friends get involved and take sides which makes reconciliation much harder
What is the threshold for the social phase?
‘I mean it’
What is the threshold for the grave dressing stage?
‘It’s time to start a new life’
What happens in the grave dressing stage of relationship breakdown?
Partners move on and try with others, minimising their own faults and maximising their ex partners to seem loyal and trustworthy
