Simile
Direct comparison
Describes something by comparing it so something else, using the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor
Indirect comparison
Describes one thing in terms of another, using a statement instead of a comparison
Personification
Describes the appearance or behaviour of an inanimate object by giving it a quality or characteristic of a living creature
Oxymoron
Is the placement side by side of two contrasting ideas or statements
Hyperbole
Is a deliberate exaggeration in order to make a point
Euphemism
Is a less harsh word used to avoid causing offense or hurt
Pun
A device that makes use of different meanings of two identical or similar-sounding words
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds at the start of words
Assonace
Repetition of vowel sounds in words
Onomatopoeia
A word that sounds like the thing it describes or sound immitations
Innuendo
A hint, or when something has been implied
Paradox
Sounds like a contradiction but is actually true
Irony
When you say the opposite of what you mean
Idiom
A widely used saying or expression containing figurative meaning
Antithesis
Opposite things or ideas next to each other in order to draw out their contrast
