Alliteration
Repetition of consonant Sounds- She sells seashells by the shore.
(consonance- consonant sounds are repeated in the middle or end of a word, for example, ‘easy peasy lemon squeezy’.)
Anaphora/epistrophe
Repetition of the same word at the beginning of sentences. Opposite to epistrophe
Assonance
Repetition of vowel Sounds, Internal vowels similar- How about now?
Chiasmus
Parts reversed- people should live to eat, not eat to live.
Euphemism
Sugarcoating in layman’s term- Black man as a coloured man
Metaphor
Comparison of two dissimilar things- the snow is a white blanket, all the world’s a stage.
Metonymy — more abstract in nature
Word or phrases substituted with the original which is closely associated with. an umbrella term. doesnt necessarily have to substitute it. The Holy Trinity- Bhabha, Spivak, and Said
Onomatopoeia
Sound- Clap of thunder
Personification/pathetic fallacy
An inanimate object with human qualities- The wind howls in the night, the lightning dances across the sky.

Simile
usually formed with ‘like’ or ‘as’; more of a comparison- As white as snow, as smooth as silk
Synecdoche — more defined attribute
substitution of a term that is part of a whole for the whole- “grey beard” refers to an old man, “suit” refers to a businessman.
Transferred epithet
adjective qualifying a noun- sleepless nights, scornful eye, weary road, exhausted pen
Hyperbole
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. (Hyper)

Oxymoron is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect- cruel kindness, perfectly imperfect,
Apostrophe
An apostrophe is when somebody addresses an abstract concept or inanimate object as if it were alive. This is different than personification (when an inanimate object or abstract idea is represented as animated or endowed with personality). With an apostrophe, these things are merely addressed- Hello darkness, my old friend
