(Imitative harmony) The use of the words whose sounds suggest their meaning
E.g: a green snake hissed as it slithered in the grass
Alliteration
The matching or repeating of consonant sounds
E.g: she sell sea shells by the see shore
Personification
Giving human qualities to an animal or object
E.g: the rose wept/ there are times when I think my computer hates me
Symbolism
Objects used to represent other things or ideas
E.g: A dove is a Sybil of hope
Imagery
Mental images or a product of the imagination
E.g: the slimy pumpkin seeds slid through my fingers
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sound
E.g: i must confess that in my quest I felt depressed and restless
Consonance
The repetition of consonants
E.g: all mammals named Sam are clammy
Pun
A play on words often for humorous effect
E.g: a bicycle can stand on its own because it is two-tired
Clichè
A word or phrase that has become overly familiar or commonplace
E.g: monkey see monkey do
Metaphor
The comparison of 2 things that have some qualities in common
E.g: the clouds are marshmallow puffs in the sky
Oxymoron
Successive words that seem to contradict each other
E.x. Living dead
Synecdoche
A term for part of a something used to refer to the whole.
Basically calling a part of something but meaning all of it
E.g. All hands on deck
Metonymy
One word or phrase is substituted for another for which it is closely situated with
E.x. A cluster of lab coats discussed their latest discovery
