an implied comparison of 2 apparently dissimilar things using ‘like’ or ‘as’
metonym
a comparison of two similar things in which one thing stands for something larger
analogy
a comparison, often extended, between two different things in order to highlight a similarity between them
conceit
extended use of methaphor for a section or for the entirety of a poem; an elaborately sustained comparison between 2 dissimilar things.
Petrarchan conceit
love poems, compared using spurned, suffering suitors to describe their beloved (ie. eyes like the sun)
zeugma
two parallel phrases in which corresponding words are placed in the opposite order (ie “though learned, well bred; though well-bred, sincere”)
oxymoron
the juxtaposition of incongruous or contradictory terms (ie freezing fire”
onomatopeia
a word which sounds like what it represents (buzz, hiss, rattle, bang)
apostrophe
when an absent person, inanimate object (the sun), or abstract being (death) is addressed directly.
personification
when an intimate object or abstract concept is given human attributes
hyperbole
an exaggeration done in earnest or for comic effect
