Metaphor
A type of figurative language that describes something that may be unfamiliar to the readers by referring to it as though it was something else that is more familiar
Simile
A type of figurative language that directly points to similarities between two things, uses the words “like” or “as”
Imagery
A vivid description that appeals to the reader’s senses
Hyperbole
An overstatement intended to achieve a particular effect
Personification
Human characteristics are given to objects, abstract ideas, natural forces, or animals
Symbolism
The author uses a concrete object, action, or character to represent an abstract idea
Allusion
A reference to a historical person or event, a fictional character or event, a mythological or religious character or event, or an artistic work
Cliches
Common sayings that lack originality but are familiar and relatable to the audience
Dialect & Slang
Linguistic qualities that an author might incorporate into his or her writing in order to develop characters or setting
Foreshadowing
A hint at the events that are going to unfold in a story
Types of Irony (3)
Verbal- a character says something that is the opposite of what he or she means
Situational- something happens that contradicts what the audience expected to happen
Dramatic- The audience knows about something that a character does not
