metaphor
a direct comparison of 2 unlike things. The child’s is the sunshine of her father’s life.
Simile
a comparison of 2 unlike things using “Like” “as” or “than”. (the child shines like the sun)
Personification
giving human characteristics to something non-human
onomatopoeia
a word that imitates a real-life sound (Boom)
Idiom
a common saying that is specific to a language, (it’s raining cats and dogs out there)
hyperbole
an exaggeration for effect (I must have answered a thousand calls today)
Symbolism
the use of symbols to represent an abstract idea or quality ( the dove is a symbol of piece)
