Metaphor
Describing something unfamiliar to the reader with something familiar; ‘Juliet is the sun’
Simile
Pointing out similarities between two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’
Imagery
Vivid description using the senses; sight, sound, smell, taste, touch.
Hyperbole
An overstatement, an exaggeration (can be humorous)
Personification
Human characteristics are attributed to objects, abstract ideas, natural forces, and animals
Symbolism
Concrete object, action, or character to represent an abstract idea; roses=beauty, light=truth, darkness=evil.
Allusion
Reference to a historical person or event, a fictional character or event, an artist or artistic work, a mythological or religious character or event; ‘she has a Mona Lisa smile’.
Cliches
lack originality but are familiar and relatable to the audience
