Fighting Disease Flashcards
What do bacteria do to make you feel ill
Damages cells
Produces toxins
Why do you feel ill when you have a virus
In your body it replicates itself then uses your cells to replicate it. This cell damage make you feel ill
What are the three things white blood cells do to stop foreign cells attacking your body
Consume them- engulf and digest cells
Produce antibodies- locks onto antigen and kills
Produce antitoxins- counteract toxins produced by invading bacteria
What do painkillers do
Relieves the pain. Doesn’t actually attack the cause of the disease just help reduce symptoms
What is the name given to the cause of a disease
Pathogens
Give an example of a painkiller
Asperin
What do antibodies do
Antibodies actually kill the bacteria causing the problem without killing your own body cells.
Do antibodies destroy viruses
No because viruses reproduce using your cells
Why is it hard to destroy viruses
Because it is hard to develop drugs that kill just the virus cell withoutbkilling your own cells
How can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics
The bacteria can mutate and become restistant to antibiotics
If bacteria become resistant to antibiotics what will happen if you try and stop the bacteria
Only the non-resistant strains of bscteria will be killed
