fight or flight response Flashcards
1
Q
outline the fight or flight response
A
- generated by the sympathetic branch of the ANS
- the hypothalamus detects stressor or threat
- stimulates SNS which increases heart rate and breathing rate
- sympathetic nerves cause adrenal medulla to release adrenaline into the bloodstream
- flight or flight response occurs, reduced digestion, pupils dilate, sweating
- stressor disappears and PNS returns body back to normal
2
Q
heart rate inreases
A
to speed up blood flow to vital organs, muscles and improve spread of adrenaline around body
3
Q
breathing rate increases
A
to increase oxygen intake
4
Q
dilation
A
to improve vision
5
Q
production of sweat
A
to facilitate temperature regulation
6
Q
reduced functioning of digestive and immune systems
A
to save energy for prioritised functioning such as running
7
Q
flow of blood is diverted from skin surface
A
blood is needed by organs and muscles to flee or fight
