Q

How and why was the beach profiling used ?

A
  • used a clinometer and ranging pole
  • measured the gradient of the beach each time the profile changes
  • expected to see steeper profile on the west side of each groyne (LSD)

Q

What were the weaknesses to the beach profiling ?

A
  • some people didn’t know how to use the clinometer = inaccurate readings

Q

How and why was sediment shape used ?

A
  • pebble is selected on each side of groyne

- shape is judged using scale of roundness to see if groynes have an effect on LSD

Q

What were the weaknesses to the questionnaire ?

A
  • answers are subjective

- difficult to get good results as not many people were around

Q

How and why was the geology map used ?

A
  • shows rock type
  • helps us understand erosion rate
  • helps choose range of sites

Q

How and why was the OS map used ?

A
  • hows human and physical features

- helps choose range of sites e.g. some with and without coastal defences

16
Q

What were the weaknesses with the OS map ?

A
  • might be outdated and not show recent changes
17
Q

How did we choose our sites ?

A
  • used geology map
  • used OS map
  • made sure sites were close enough so we could collect data on the same day
  • did a risk assessment to make sure we would be safe and able to collect data
18
Q

What 4 ways did we present our data ?

A
  • beach profile = line graph
  • sediment shape = stacked column graph
  • questionnaire = wordle
  • interview = table of :) & :(
19
Q

Conclude your results

A
  • data = groynes have prevented LSD to some extent
  • map of DW = several groynes on spit to prevent erosion
  • beach profiles = build up of sand on the west side of each groyne
  • sediment shape supports statement as pebble shape is distributed
  • data = communties have been affected positively and negatively
  • photos = beach was closed, groynes were being fixed, beach replenishment
  • makes are look unattractive and put tourists off affecting businesses
  • questionnaire backs this up as people said DW didnt need coastal management meaning they didnt like it
  • 4 people + groynes - it makes the beach bigger = more attractive
  • 3 people + the sea wall - protected the railway line
20
Q

How accurate were your results for beach profiling

A
  • somewhat accurate
  • some human errors
  • weren’t able to visit many places
  • beach closed for maintenance
  • accurate enough to show LSD
21
Q

How accurate was your overall conclusion ?

A
  • somewhat accurate
  • asked people + warden
  • didnt know if they were local or tourists
  • warden may be biased
22
Q

How reliable were your results ?

A
  • warden +
  • secondary data +
  • photos +
  • could reach different conclusion…
  • different weather
  • management strategies
