Fields and their consequences (Paper 2) Flashcards
Electric, magnetic and gravitational potential. And capacitance
What is coulombs law in words?
The force between two point charges is proportional to the product of charges and is inversely proportional to the square of distance between the charges.
What is an electric field?
A region surrounding a charged object which causes a force to be
exerted on any charged object placed within the field.
What is capacitance?
The charge stored per unit pd in a capacitor.
How are dielectrics formed?
Polar molecules, one end positive, one end negative. When there’s no field they are randomly aligned but when in an electric field they will align positive attracting to the negative capacitor etc
When a capacitor is discharging, what happens?
Current flows in the opposite direction, and the current, charge and potential difference will drop exponentially.
What is a force field?
An area in which an object experiences a non contact force.
Explain how force fields are formed
During the interaction of masses, static charge or moving charges.
What can an electric field created by two parallel plates be used for?
Finding out whether a particle is charged, and whether its negative or positive. Fire particles at right angles to the field and observe its path. A charged particle will experience a constant force and make a parabolic shape from accelerating. If it’s negative it will go the opposite direction to the field.
