Fields Flashcards
What is the definition of electric field strength?
The electrical force acting on a unit positive charge.
What is the definition of electrical potential at a point?
The work done in moving a unit positive charge from infinity to a point.
How does the path taken between two points in an electric field effect the magnitude of energy required?
It does not impact the amount of energy required, as energy is independent of the path taken to move a charge between points in an electric field.
What is an electronvolt (eV)?
The energy required when one electron accelerates through a potential difference of one volt.
What are 3 metals that can exhibit ferromagnetism?
Iron, Nickel and Cobalt
What is ferromagnetism?
A magnetic effect in which magnetic dipoles can be made to align resulting in the material becoming magnetised.
State the everyday forces in order from largest relative magnitude to smallest.
Strong Nuclear, Electromagnetic, Weak nuclear, Gravitational
State the everyday forces from longest to shortest range.
Gravitational & electromagnetic (both infinite), Strong Nuclear, Weak nuclear
What is an electric field?
The region that surrounds electrically charged particles in which a force is exerted on other electrically charged particles.
How would you convert eV to J?
Multiply eV by the charge of an electron
