7x more common in women. Up to 5% of women and 1.6% of men

pathogensis of Fibromyalgia
central sensitisation in the brain.
stiffness/pain - progressive diffuse/achey
multi region hypersensitivity
natural history of Fibromyalgia
not fatal,
symtoms worsen due to decreased sleep/decreased exercise
manifestations of fibromyalgia
Persistent (≥ 3 mo) widespread pain
Stiffness
Fatigue; disrupted and unrefreshing sleep
Multiple other unexplained symptoms, anxiety and/or depression, and functional impairment of activities of daily living (ADLs)
IBD/cystitis
Stressed/Tense
Migraiine/tension headaches
symptoms of Fibromyalgia
aching/stiff/tried muscles extreme fatigue poor sleep concentration/memory issues IBS worsened by trauma/exposure to dampness or cold/ a physician who implies that the disorder is “all in the head.” increased risk of MSK problems
Signs
multiple tender points
complications
15-44% incidence of disability and 10x more likely to commit suicide.
prognosis
Fibromyalgia is not a life-threatening, deforming, or progressive disease. 1/3 must modify work to accommodate illness.
