Definition
A
Solid, noncancerous breast lumps

Aetiology
A
Cause is unknown
Might be related to reproductive hormones
Fibroadenomas occur more often during your reproductive years
Can become bigger during pregnancy or the use of hormone therapy
Can shrink after menopause when hormone levels decrease`

Epidemiology
A
May be less common in those on the contraceptive pill
Common in 15-25yrs

Presenting symptoms
A
- Breast discomfort, pain, swelling, lump
- Nipple discharge – if blood stained, suspect malignancy
- Solid breast lumps that are:
- round with distinct, smooth borders
- easily moved
- firm or rubbery
- painless

Signs on physical examination
A
- Focal/diffuse nodularity of breasts
- Smooth, well-circumsribed, mobile lumps (1-2cm in diameter, breast mouse)
- Features of malignancy are absent –dimpling, peau d’orange skin changes, enlarged axillary lymph nodes

Investigations
A
Triple assessment
- Clinical examination
- Imaging – mammography, USS in (<35). Benign masses are less likely to be calcified –microcalcifications = malignancy. MRI can be useful
- Cytology/histology – FNA (fine needle aspiration) cytology

A
Conservative
Remove if large

A
Good, recurrence common
No increased risk of cancer in women with simple FA and no FHx of breast cancer
