Fibres and Fabrics Flashcards
Properties of natural/cellulose fibres
Absorbent, hot washable, crease easily, comfortable to wear, breathable
Uses of natural/ cellulose fibres
Fashion clothing, sportswear and nappy filling
Properties of natural animal fibres
Very absorbent, warm, NOT EASY CARE, (wool shrinks, silk gets brittle when washed), durable, can be itchy
Uses of natural animal fibres
clothing, jumpers, coats, scarves
Properties of regenerated
creases easily, can be washed hot, soft, drapes very well, comfortable, cool to wear
Uses of regenerated fibres
fashion products, fine knitwear and lining
Staple (short)
All natural fibres, except silk which is filament. Synthetic fibres can be cut into staple
Filament (long, smooth)
All synthetic fibres and silk
Which fibres are thermoplastic and what does that mean?
Synthetic fibres are thermoplastic which means that they can be heated and set into different shapes. Eg. acrylic can be crimped so it looks just like wool
Why are fibres mixed together?
To improve their properties and make them cheaper
Blending
When fibres are mixed into a yarn (eg. polyester and cotton in school shirts/ Polyester= easy care, cotton= breathable and comfortable)
Mixed
Different yarns are put on a loom to make a fabric (eg. Doupion silk- warp is often fine silk or viscose, weft is thicker)
