Fibres And Fabrics Flashcards
What are the good points of cotton?
Good: strong (even when wet), hard-wearing, absorbent, comfortable, cool easy to wash, doesn’t cause allergies and fairly cheap
What is cotton (from seed pods if cotton plants) fibre, used in what fabrics, appearance and uses?
Used in denim, corduroy, calico, it’s smooth and used in jeans, T-shirts, blouses, soft furnishings.
What are the bad point of cotton?
Creases easily, highly flammable, poor elasticity, can shrink when washed, dries slowly.
Good points of wool.
Soft, warm, absorbent, low flammability, good elasticity, crease resistant
Bad points of wool
Can shrink when washed, dries slowly, can feel itchy, fairly expensive
Good point of linen
Strong (even when wet), hard-wearing, absorbent , comfortable to wear, cool
Bad points of linen
Creases badly, high flammability, poor elasticity, poor drape, can be expensive
Good points of silk
Smooth, glossy, absorbent, good drape, low flammability, comfortable to wear
Bad points of silk
Creases easily, might not wash well, weak when wet, expensive
Good points of viscose
Smooth, light, glossy, soft, absorbent, comfortable, easily washable, good drape, fairly cheap
Bad points of viscose
High flammability, not very hard-wearing, poor elasticity
Good points of acetate
Smooth, glossy, soft, comfortable, easily washable, good drape, resists biological/sun damage, fairly cheap
Bad points of acetate
High flammability, not very hard-wearing, poor elasticity, not very absorbent
Good pints of polyester
Strong (even when wet), hard-wearing, low flammability, good elasticity, cheap, resists creasing, dries quickly, resists biological damage
Bad points of polyester
Not absorbent, not biodegradable, damaged by strong acids, melts as it burns
