What is type 1 FGM?
Clitoridectomy - partial or total removal of the clitoris, rarely only the prepuce (surrounding fold of skin).
What is type 2 FGM?
Excision - partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without excision of the labia majora.
What is type 3 FGM?
Infibulation - narrowing of vaginal opening through creation of covering seal formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora or majora, sometimes through stitching, with or without removal of clitoris.
What is type 4 FGM?
All other harmful procedures for non-medical purposes.
What are some immediate complications of FGM?
Severe pain Excessive bleeding Fever infections Urinary problems wound healing problems shock death
What are the long term complications of FGM?
UTI/dysuria Vaginal infection, itching, discharge Painful menses, difficulty passing blood Scar tissue/keloid Sexual dysfunction Childbirth complications Depression/anxiety PTSD etc
Where is the practice of FGM most common?
Africa, Middle East and Asia.
