FFICM Flashcards
Define sepsis
Life threatening organ dysfunction due to dysregulated host response to infection
—organ dysfunction defined as an increase of >2 on the SOFA score
What is the SOFA score?
Repetitive scoring system used in sepsis
Resp: P/F ratio
CVS: MAP +/- vasopressor
Neuro: GCS
Renal: Cr & UO
GI: bilirubin
Haem: Plts
What is septic shock?
A subset of sepsis in which a particularly profound circulatory, cellular and metabolic abnormalities are associated with a greater risk of mortality than with sepsis alone
Clinically identified by:
1. Vasopressor requirement to maintain MAP >65mmHg
2. Serum lactate >2mmol/L in the absence of hypovolaemia
What is massive pulmonary haemorrhage?
Generally a rate of blood loss that can cause ventilatory failure or cardiovascular instability, often accepted to be >100ml/hr or >500ml/day
What is a massive haemothorax?
If >1500ml blood output immediately or >200ml/hr for 4 hours
