Fever and Sweating Flashcards
clinical manifestation of high fever
thirst and preference for cold water, profuse sweating, surging and large pulse, dry yellow tongue coating
clinical significance of high fever
- Yang Ming syndrome
2. qi stage of warm disease
clinical manifestation and significance of tidal fever
- obvious fever in afternoon (3 - 5 p.m.), maybe accompanied by thirst w/ preference for cold water, abdominal pain, constipation - clinical significance: retention of dry-heat in the stomach and intestines
- hiding fever (doctor doesn’t feel feverishness when he touches the skin), more fever in the afternoon - clinical significance: damp-heat syndrome
- low fever in the afternoon or evening and sensation of steaming fever in the bones - clinical significance: yin deficiency
clinical significance of mild fever
- late stage of internal injury
2. warm-heat disease
clinical significance of irregular alternating chills and fever
- Shao Yang syndrome
2. GB heat
clinical significance of regularly alternating chills and fever (every 2, 4, 6 hours)
malaria
clinical significance of external syndrome w/ sweating
- external deficiency syndrome (wei qi deficiency)
- external heat syndrome in external invasion of wind-heat
- exterior wind attack (prevalence of wind)
clinical significance of external syndrome w/o sweating
exterior wind cold (prevalence of cold)
clinical significance of internal syndrome w/ sweating
- internal excessive heat syndrome
- deficiency of yang qi, defensive qi not firm
- yin deficiency w/ deficient heat driving the sweat outward
clinical significance of internal syndrome w/o sweating
- yang deficiency in chronic disease; 2. consumption of fluid and blood
clinical manifestation of spontaneous sweating
frequent sweating during the daytime, especially after little physical movement
clinical significance of spontaneous sweating
- qi deficiency
2. yang deficiency
clinical significance of night sweating
- yin deficiency w/ internal heat
2. deficiency of yin and qi
spontaneous sweating and night sweating combined might indicate
yin and qi deficiency
clinical manifestation of exhaustion sweating
profuse sweating in the process of a disease, critical sign
clinical significance of exhaustion sweating (profuse sweating)
- high fever and warm limbs, dipsesis, irritability, profuse, oily, and warm sweat, warm and sticky hands - yin collapse
- profuse and cold sweating, cold limbs, syncope, listlessness and chills - yang collapse
clinical significance of shiver sweating
- if fever abates, pulse calms down, and the body cools down after sweating, it is a sign that the heat has gone with the sweat and the body is in recovery
- if fever refuses to subside, and symptoms are not relieved after sweating, the shows exuberance of evil qi and decline of right qi - illness is worsening
shiver sweating is a reversal point in the development of the disease
clinical significance of head sweating
- extreme heat in the upper jiao driving the sweat outward
- stomach damp-heat steaming upwards (food retention w/ stomach heat or damp-heat)
- deficiency yang floating upwards (collapse of yang, too much yin cold obstructing inside)
- body constitution: preponderance of yang-qi, heat steaming upwards (liver fire)
clinical manifestation of hemilateral sweating
sweating appears of half of the body; either left or right, without sweat on the other side
clinical significance of hemilateral sweating
seen in stroke, flaccidity, paraplegia - obstruction of collaterals on affected side by wind-damp, blood-phlegm stasis, wind-phlegm, which cause difficulty in flow of qi and blood in the meridian
clinical significance of sweating on palms and soles
- yin deficiency with internal heat
- extreme heat in yangming
- accumulation of damp heat in the middle jiao
clinical significance of chest sweating
- heart-spleen qi deficiency
2. heart-kidney yin deficiency
clinical significance of genital sweating
damp heat in the lower jiao
clinical significance of hyperhydrosis
heart qi leaking
