excess syndrome usually caused by liver and gall bladder fire disturbing the upper orifices
tinnitus - low and gradual, can be reduced or stopped by pressure
deficiency syndrome usually caused by liver and kidney yin deficiency; or insufficiency of spinal marrow due to kidney essence deficiency
sudden deafness in new disease
- ear infection
- excess syndrome usually caused by flaring-up of liver and gall bladder fire
- warm heat accumulated in upper jiao and stagnated in the ears
gradual deafness in chronic disease
deficiency syndrome usually caused by deficiency and failure of kidney essence qi
sudden hearing impairment
- excess syndrome usually caused by phlegmatic turbidity
2. wind-evil attacking upward and obstructing the ears
gradual hearing impairment
deficiency syndrome usually caused by deficiency and failure of the kidney essence, causing malnutrition of the ears
severe ocular itching, acute
excess syndrome
mild ocular itching, on/off
blood deficiency
severe ocular pain
excess syndrome, usually due to liver fire flaring up or external invasion of wind-heat
mild ocular pain
deficiency syndrome, usually due to fire, deficient heat
dizziness accompanied by headache, distention of head, heavy sensation of the head
- excess syndrome, usually due to wind-fire attacking upper orifices
- damp-phlegm confusing the upper orifices
dizziness accompanied by tired mind, vertigo, tinnitus
- deficiency syndrome, usually due to sinking of middle qi and non-ascending of clear yang
- shortage of essence and blood due to liver and kidney deficiency
blurred vision, night blindness, and diplopia
all have similar etiology and pathogenesis
usually indicate liver (blood) and kidney (essence) deficiency, causing malnutrition of the eyes, commonly seen in prolonged disease or elderly patients
insomnia
- heart blood deficiency
- hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency
- gall bladder phlegm heat
somnolence accompanied by lassitude, heaviness of head, eyes, and limbs, oppression and fullness of the chest
phlegm-dampness disturbing the spleen and failure of clear yang to rise (spleen yang deficiency w/ dampness obstruction)
