Feul cells Flashcards
what are the 2 types of fuel cells
chemical cells
hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells
what is the method to making chemical cells
- put a stick of zinc in zinc sulfate
- put a piece of copper in copper sulfate
- place a piece of filter paper soaked in potassium chloride solution between 2 solutions
- connect the 2 metal sticks using crocodile clips and wire to a voltmeter
how does a chemical cell work
electrons will flow through the zinc to the copper (because zinc is more reactive than copper). Ions pass through the filter paper from one beaker to the other completing the circuit
what are 2 pros of a chemical cell
are suitable for portable devices
are cheap to manufacture
what are 2 cons of a chemical cell
may contain harmful substances
do not produce a voltage when open of the reactants is used up
what are 2 pros of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell
produce water as the only waste product
produce a voltage as long as the fuel-air is supplied
what are 2 cons of hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell
not portable
expensive to manufacture
what is a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell
where hydrogen and oxygen are used to produce a voltage
what is the word formula for a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell
hydrogen + oxygen –> WATER
