What is an outcast? (Eta)

A

Those who dealt with slaughtering animals, disposing of animals, carrying our executions, and removing corpses. Touching the dead was a violation of Buddhist ideals, even though this job was necessary. It was rare for the outcasts to move to a different class.
We’re allowed to enter towns but not the shops
People didn’t want to enter eta community unless they were forced or for buisness
In their community, the eta had managers who were either officially or internally appointed.

Explain a peasant in Japanese feudal system

A

Farmers who had a privileged position just below the samurai because they were responsible for the production of rice, the most important commodity in japan, and basic food for the country. Lived difficult lives.
They weren’t allowed to leave their land since the daimyo did not want to lose profit of their labor. They were also forbidden to smoke or drink. They needed permission to travel outside their district.

A

Honbyakusho: farmers controlled specific land plots and sometimes owned their own homes.

Hyakusho: ordinary farmers that down own the land their work on.

A

Born into their social class and had to marry someone in that class. Women in rural areas had more freedom than those who were upperclassmen.
Worked in the home and also the fields with their husband’s planting and harvesting crops, gathering wood, and raising silk worms.
Were still considered lower than men and did not have legal existence (could not own land and if gone through divorce would lose everything)
