In the 10th century, a series of invasions cause instability in Europe. They were made from vikings,Muslims and Hungarians.

Because the kings couldn’t ensure the security, they had to hely on nobles the defence of the population estabilling a system of personal relationships: vassalage

People trusted in powerful nobles who built castles and had armies, to be protected. In exchange,they became serfs.
1B-vassalage, the Basis of Feudalism.
Vassalage is a pledge of allegiance.

The ceremony had 2 parts:
- Homage: the vassal knelt before the king promised to be loyal and help him.
- Investiture: the king gave a fiefdom to a vassal.

The fiefdom could be inheredited and also transfered to lesser the nobles.
1C- a stratified society.
The society in the Middle Ages was unequal. It was divided into different small groups, into which people were born and remained for life.
