Daimyo
Military ruler of a territory; used their samurai to protect peasants who paid them and were loyal
Samurai
Warriors, bodyguards, and protectors of Daimyo’s territory; bound to the Daimyo by a code of honor called Bushido - less than 10% of the population
Shinto
a native Japanese religion meaning “way of the gods,” and focuses on worshiping nature and ancestor gods
feudalism
a social and economic system in which peasant farmers worked land for a landowner (daimyo), and by paying a price and giving their loyalty, they were protected by the owner’s samurai

the “way of the warrior” a samurai was expected to show reckless courage, reverence for the gods, fairness, and generosity towards those weaker than himself
