Imperialism
the takeover of a country or territory by a stronger nation with the intent of dominating the political, social, and economic life of the people in that territory
Nationalism
the more land the greater the nation
White Man’s Burden
Belief that Europeans and Americans had a duty to civilize the rest of the world
Genocide
the intentional mass murder of a particular group of people
Apartheid
any system or practice that separates people according to color, ethnicity, caste, etc.
Ethnocentrism
viewing ones own culture as superior to others, and applying your own culture’s values to judge people in other cultures
Rite of Passage
a special ceremony or ritual that marks a particular stage of life
Ex. reaching adulthood
Developed Nations
high standards of living, and economies based on a combination of industries, service, and agriculture
Ex. United States, Europe, Japan, Australia
Developing Nations
low standards of living, little industry, and an economy that mostly relies on farming
Ex. Most of the countries of Africa, Asia, S. America
