Fetal Circulation Flashcards
What is the function of the Forman ovale?
The foramen ovale allows the transfer of the blood from the right to the left atrium and bypasses the lungs and pulmonary circulation.
What is the function of the ductus venosus?
The ductus venosus allows part of the oxygenated blood from the placenta via the umbilical vein to go almost directly into the right atrium of the fetal heart without passing through the liver.
What is the function of the umbilical artery?
The umbilical artery carries deoxygenated, nutrient-depleted blood from the fetus to the placenta.
What is the function of the umbilical vein?
The umbilical vein carries oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the placenta to the fetus.
What is the function of the umbilical cord?
Provides a connection to the placenta for the exchange of oxygen and nutrients from maternal circulation to fetal circulation.
What is arterial duct?
The arterial duct permits the transfer of the blood from the pulmonary artery to the aorta and bypasses the lungs.
