1st Trimester
Rapid tissue development begins and the embryo is extremely vulnerable to noxious substance/ mother’s health issues. Fetus development starts with brain and works down the body. embryo will begin to look like a baby in the 2nd month. -Internal organs become more complex and facial features form. 3rd month-arms, legs, hands, and feet.
2nd Trimester
Fetal development continues with development of fingers, toes, eyelids, and regular heart beats. Babies sleep regularly and mothers begin to show.
3rd Trimester
Completing fetus. Internal organs, brain and nervous system completely develop. Fetus become viable in 6th-7th months ( Fetus is able to survive away from the mother)
Nutrition and pregnancy
A pregnant women is eating for 2 and should gain about 25-35 pound during her pregnancy. Malnutrition and are underweight –increase risk of mental or motor impairment and a hire infant mortality rate. Being overweight can cause fetal death, Still birth, defects in newborn central nervous system.
reduces sex drives, create menstrual disorder, and infertility.
Drug and pregnancy
New born children of drug addicts thend to be addict themselves at birth. Potential problem include birth defects, low birth weight, abnormal crying, irritability, sleeping and feeding difficulties and muscle tumor.
Alcohol and pregnancy
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) - unusual facial characteristic. Small head and body size. heart defects, intellectual and behavioral impairment.
Smoking and pregnancy
Low birth weight, preterm birth, breathing difficulties, fetal death, and crib death–studies have shown that women that smoke during pregnancy have a greater risk for her child smoking during adolescent years.
Reaction to infertility
Depression, guilt, depression, frustration, or anger as they pursue infertility counseling. Some people may be in denial, grieving from having to accept their situation.
Feminist Perspective infertility -Solomon
1- People are generally unaware of the crises situation for infertile women.
2-people tend to look down on infertile women
3-infertile women experience shock from the loss
4- infertile women are stereotyped as desperate to be pregnant.
5- More vulnerable due to the major life crises.
Solomon Two pronged approach
1- understand that the women is extremely vulnerable and she should encouraged to seek counseling to understand her feelings before seeking expensive medical procedure that may not be successful.
2- Altering attitudes about infertility and helping the individual reclaim self worth and meaning as a human being despite their abilities to have a child. Empower women to know their choices.
