. For Sunni Muslims, when Muhammad was in Madinah, he saw Jews fasting on the ten of the month of Muharram – it was a way to remember when the Israelites were saved from the Pharoah; they said Musa fasted on this day
. Muslims remember Ashura as a Day of Atonement, a day sins are forgiven if repented; many fast on the 8th, 9th and 10th of Muharram
What is Ashura for Shi’as?
.For Shi’a, Ashura is also an important festival because they remember the martyrdom of Muhammad’s grandson Hussein, by Yazid, a ruler who had demanded Hussein give his allegiance
- Hussein had refused because of the corruption, use of slavery and injustices of Yazid. Hussein and his soldiers were killed.
. For Shi’as, this festival is very sad; they wear black, mosques are covered in black cloths and poems about the tragedy are read. The story shows Muslims must stand up for justice and a better society.
