Fertilisation and Twins Flashcards
Name the 2 types of twins
Identical and non- identical
What needs to happen for pregnancy to be successful
Pregnancy results if fertilisation is successful and the zygote successfully implants into the uterus lining
How are identical twins produced
One egg, one sperm
Fertilised egg divides in two
Two parts develop separately
Babies have identical chromosomes and genes
How are non- identical twins produced
Two eggs, two sperm
Describe the journey of a sperm cell from the testis to the oviduct via sexual intercourse
Sperm cell travels down the sperm duct to the urethra, where the penis is then inserted into the vagina
Sperm then swim through a narrow entrance called the cervix to reach the uterus and then they can swim on to the oviduct to fertilise an egg
