fertilisation Flashcards
step 1
IF the pollen grain lands on the stigma of the flower of the SAME species, it begins to grow a tube
step 2
the pollen grains secretes an enzyme that digests a path towards the ovary
step 3
the ovule is surrounded by protective layers called integuments. micropyle is a small hole on one side of the ovule where the pollen tube enters
what are integuments
protective layers that surround the ovule
what is the micropyle?
a small hole on one side of the ovule where the pollen tube enters
step 4
the pollen nucleus (male gamete) travels down the tube and fuses with the female gamete
this is called fertilisation
what do you need to fertilise many ovules?
many pollen grains
what happens to the other parts of the flower after the ovule has been fertilised?
the petals, sepals, and stamens fall off
fertilised ovules grow and divide by mitosis
ovule is now a seed!
what happens to the ovary after fertilisation?
develops into a fruit
