patriarchy
social system in which 1) men and women are viewed as deeply different in biology and psychology 2) men are viewed as naturally superior to women and thus the proper leaders of society 3) men have an inherent right to control women’s sexuality
four feminist orientations
liberal, radical, cultural, women of color/womanist
two major focus areas of sociocultural theories
cultural differences & oppression and power
sociocultural theories
refers to a family of theories focused on the role of social and cultural factors in human functioning
racial identity theory
assumes that race is not a biological reality, but rather a “sociopolitical and economic convenience” defined by socially based criteria (skin color); assumes that some racial groups receive more societal resources and privileges than others; focuses on the meaning that people make of their own race and other races
