what is feminism?
an ideology that campaigns for the abolishment of the patriarchy in society.
what were the three waves of feminism?
first wave focused on civil rights e.g. right to vote
second wave focused on improvement of social rights e.g. sexual harassment and equal pay
third wave focused on rights for diversity
what are gender roles?
men and women both have fixed roles to perform in society and are less suited to their opposite e.g. men cannot care domestically as well as women
how are women oppressed socially?
socialised to inferior roles - women are socialised to be docile and obidient towards their partner
how does the family oppress women?
it has a natural hierarchy where the man is the breadwinner and controls the finances
how are women oppressed in the workplace?
there is huge misogyny - less pay, harassment and long hours
what is the dual burden?
women are expected to work a full time job and take care of unpaid domestic labor.
how will equality be achieved according to feminists?
formal rights are needed, but attitudes towards women need a major overhaul for equality to be achieved.
what is Wollstonecraft’s argument?
women are raised to be obedient and beautiful, not to work
what is Young’s argument?
the idea of gender was popularised by feminists to reject traditional gender roles given at birth
