Female Reproductive System Flashcards
Ovary
The oocytes mature prior to release (ovulation) - it also is responsible for estrogen and progesterone secretion
Fimbria
Fimbria are a fringe of tissue adjacent to an ovary that sweep an oocyte into the Fallopian tube/oviduct
Fallopian Tube / Oviduct
Transports the oocyte to the uterus - it is also typically where fertilisation occurs
Uterus
Organ where a fertilised egg will implant and develop (becoming an embryo)
Endometrium
The mucous membrane linking of the uterus, it thickens in preparation for implantation or is otherwise lost (via menstruation)
Vagina
Passage leading to the uterus by which the penis can enter (uterus protected by a muscular opening call the cervix)
Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone
Produced by the hypothalamus - stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to release gonadotropins that act on the gonads (ovaries)
Luteinising Hormone (LH)
- Umbrella hormone
- function
- Gonadotropin
2. surge in release causes ovulation, results in the formation of the corpus luteum
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Umbrella hormone
- function
- Gonadotropin
2. Gonadotropin - stimulates follicle growth, stimulates estrogen secretion (from developing follicles)
Estrogen
Produced by follicles - thickens endometrium, inhibits FSH and LH for most of the cycle, stimulates FSH and LH release pre-ovulation
Progesterone
Produced by corpus luteum - maintains the endometrium, inhibits FSH and LH
Three main components of the menstrual and ovarian cycle
- The follicular phase
- Ovulation
- The luteal phase
