female reproductive system Flashcards
What is a female reproductive cell?
Ova
Female reproductive system
Provides place for baby , fertilization, and secrets sex hormones.
What does the breast do?
Provides nourishment for baby.
What does the female reproductive system consist of?
2 internal and external reproductive organs
What do the internal genitalia consist of?
Located in pelvic cavity. Consist of - Uterus 2 ovaries 2 uterine tubes And the vagina, which extents to external surface of body.
What does the external genitalia consist of?
The vulva
Where are the ovaries located?
On each side of uterus, within pelvic cavity.
What are the ovaries?
Small almond shaped gland that’s produce ova(or ovum) and the female sex hormones.
Ovaries
Approximately every 28 days hormones from anterior pituitary follicle stimulating hormone(FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH) simulate maturation of ovum and trigger ovulation
What is ovulation?
Process by which one ovary releases an ovum
What are estrogens and progesterone?
Sex hormones produced bye ovaries. Stimulate lining of uterus to be prepared to receive fertilized ovum.
What are estrogen and progesterone responsible for?
Responsible for secondary female sexual characteristics.
What are uterine tubes?
Also known as fallopian tubes/ oviducts.
Approximately five and a half inches long. Run from area around each ovary to either side of upper portion of uterus.
What are fimbiae
near ovaries, unattached ends of the two tubes expand into finger like projections. Catches ovum after ovulation and directed into uterine tubes, the uterine tube can then propel the ovum from the ovary to the uterus so it can implants
Fertilization/ conception
Meeting of the sperm and egg. Takes place within the upper one half of the uterine tube.
What is the uterus?
Hallow. Pear-shaped organ that contains a thick muscular wall, mucous membrane lining, and rich supply of blood
Where is the uterus located?
It lies between center of pelvic cavity between bladder and rectum.
How is the uterus at and how is it held up?
Normally the uterus is bent slightly forward and is held in position by strong fibrous ligaments anchored in outer layer of uterus.
What is the perimetrium?
Outer layer of uterus.
How many sections does the uterus have? And what are they?
It has three sections. Fundus which is the upper portion between where the uterine tubes connect to the uterus. Corpus which is the central portion and the cervix which is the lower portion, neck of the uterus opens into vagina.
What is the endometrium?
Inner layer of uterine wall, contains rich blood supply. Reacts to hormonal changes every month that prepare it to receive a fertilized ovum. In a normal pregnancy the fertilized ovum implants in the endometrium, which can provide nourishment and protection for the developing fetus.
What is the myometrium?
Contractions of the thick muscular wall of uterus. Assists in propelling the fetus through the birth canal at delivery
