female reproductive system Flashcards
What is a female reproductive cell?
Ova
Female reproductive system
Provides place for baby , fertilization, and secrets sex hormones.
What does the breast do?
Provides nourishment for baby.
What does the female reproductive system consist of?
2 internal and external reproductive organs
What do the internal genitalia consist of?
Located in pelvic cavity. Consist of - Uterus 2 ovaries 2 uterine tubes And the vagina, which extents to external surface of body.
What does the external genitalia consist of?
The vulva
Where are the ovaries located?
On each side of uterus, within pelvic cavity.
What are the ovaries?
Small almond shaped gland that’s produce ova(or ovum) and the female sex hormones.
Ovaries
Approximately every 28 days hormones from anterior pituitary follicle stimulating hormone(FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH) simulate maturation of ovum and trigger ovulation
What is ovulation?
Process by which one ovary releases an ovum
What are estrogens and progesterone?
Sex hormones produced bye ovaries. Stimulate lining of uterus to be prepared to receive fertilized ovum.
What are estrogen and progesterone responsible for?
Responsible for secondary female sexual characteristics.
What are uterine tubes?
Also known as fallopian tubes/ oviducts.
Approximately five and a half inches long. Run from area around each ovary to either side of upper portion of uterus.
What are fimbiae
near ovaries, unattached ends of the two tubes expand into finger like projections. Catches ovum after ovulation and directed into uterine tubes, the uterine tube can then propel the ovum from the ovary to the uterus so it can implants
Fertilization/ conception
Meeting of the sperm and egg. Takes place within the upper one half of the uterine tube.
What is the uterus?
Hallow. Pear-shaped organ that contains a thick muscular wall, mucous membrane lining, and rich supply of blood
Where is the uterus located?
It lies between center of pelvic cavity between bladder and rectum.
How is the uterus at and how is it held up?
Normally the uterus is bent slightly forward and is held in position by strong fibrous ligaments anchored in outer layer of uterus.
What is the perimetrium?
Outer layer of uterus.
How many sections does the uterus have? And what are they?
It has three sections. Fundus which is the upper portion between where the uterine tubes connect to the uterus. Corpus which is the central portion and the cervix which is the lower portion, neck of the uterus opens into vagina.
What is the endometrium?
Inner layer of uterine wall, contains rich blood supply. Reacts to hormonal changes every month that prepare it to receive a fertilized ovum. In a normal pregnancy the fertilized ovum implants in the endometrium, which can provide nourishment and protection for the developing fetus.
What is the myometrium?
Contractions of the thick muscular wall of uterus. Assists in propelling the fetus through the birth canal at delivery
Menstration of the menstrual period.
When pregnancy is it established, and the endometrium is sloughed off, during a pregnancy the lining of the uterus doesn’t leave the body but it remains to nourish the fetus.
What is puberty?
Girls first menstrual period occurs during puberty. Called
menoarche.
What is menopause?
Ending of a mental activity and childbearing years. Generally stops between 40 and 55.
What is the vagina?
Muscular tube lined with mucous membrane that extends from cervix to uterus to outside of body . Allows for the passage of menstrual flow , during intercourse it receives male penis and semen , serves as birth canal.
What is semen?
Fluid containing sperm.
What is a hymen?
Thin membranous tissue that partially covers external vaginal opening or vagina orifice. Broken by use of tampons, physical activity, sex.
What is bartholins gland?
Located on either side of vaginal orifice. Secret mucus for lubrication during sex.
What is vulva?
Refers to group of structures that make up female external genitalia.
What is labia majors and labia minors?
Folds of skin that serves as protection for the genitalia, vaginal orifice, uninary meatus.
Vulva
Since the urinary tract and reproductive organs are located in the proximity to one another in each container a mucous membranes that can transport infections, there’s a danger of infection entering the urinary tract.
What is the clitoris?
Small organs containing sensitive erectile tissue thats aroused during sexual stimulation and corresponds to the penis in the mail.
What is the perineum?
Region between vaginal orifice and anus.
What role does the breast play in reproductive system?
Also known as mammary glands. Produces milk( lactation) to nourish baby. Milk produced by lactiferous glands are carried to nipple by lactiferous duct.
What do the areola?
Pigmented around nipples, as long as breasts are stimulated by a nursing infant breasts will continue to secrete milk.
What is pregnancy?
Period Of time when a baby grows in the uterus. All the body systems become involved in development of healthy infants
What is the normal length of pregnancy as well as premature?
Normal length of pregnancy is 40 weeks anything under 37 weeks is considered premature.
What is an embryo?
From the time a fertilize egg in plants in the uterus, until approximately to the end of the 8th week.during this time all major organs and body systems are formed.
What is a fetus?
Embryo stage until birth. Longest period of gestation, organs mature and begin to function.
What is the placenta?
Also called after birth, the placenta is nourishment for the baby. Is a spongy blood-filled organ, forms in the uterus next to fetus.
What is an umbilical cord?
Where the fetus is attached to the placenta. Surrounded by two membranous sacs, amnion and chorion.
What is the amnion?
Innermost sack, holds amniotic fluid in which the fetus floats.
What is the chorion?
Outer protective sac, forms part of placenta.
What is labour?
Process of expelling fetus from uterus through vagina.
What is dilation?
First stage the uterine muscle contractsstrongly to expel the fetus. During this process, the fetus presses on the cervix, causing it to dilate or expand.
What is effacement?
When the cervix dilates and becomes thinner.
What is the expulsion stage?
Second stage, cervix is completely dilated to 10 centimeters. End with delivery of baby.
What is crowning?
When the head of baby appears first.
What is breeching presentation?
When babies but appears first.
What is the placenta stage?
Last stage of labor. Immediately after childbirth, the uterus continues to contract, causing the placenta to be expelled through vagina.
