Female Reproductive Physiology and Hormonal Abnormalities Flashcards
When does the corpus luteum arrive and how does it function?
The corpus luteum arises from he remaining cells of the follicle after the oocyte is released during ovulation. It produces hormones, mainly progesterone, which prepares the endometrium for implantation of the blastula
Define oogenesis
the process of formation and maturation of ova from undifferentiated cells in the ovary
Define menopause
Menopause is defined by the absence of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months and is the natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years
Define ovulation
a mature oocyte is released from the ovary and becomes available for ovulation
What hormone stimulates theca cells and what do they produce?
LH stimulates theca cells to produce progesterone
What hormone stimulates granulosa cells and what do they produce?
FSH stimulates granulosa cells to produce oestrogen
What is the main hormone responsible for triggering the regular recruitment of primordial follicles?
FSH
