- abnormal bleeding
- pain (chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia)
- vaginal foreign body (retained tampon)

positioning of patient
supine, bringing heels up to buttocks and knees , let knees fall outwards
external examination
- swelling
- abnormalities
- discharge
lubricating speculum
cover speculum in lubrication, except very tip because you don’t want to contaminate it
inserting speculum
horizontally then rotate handles so that they are rotated upwards
keep non dominant hand on handle to keep speculum in
internal inspection
may see IUD
ectropian
red, inflamed cervix
caused by changes in fluctuations in hormones
e.g. in pregnancy
candida
thrush infection
yellow creamy discharge
trichomoniasis
discharge around os?
thick white discharge
dysuria
pelvic pain
friable cervix
gonorrhoea
yellow-green
itchy
frothy
foul smelling
trichomonas
thin, grey/green discharge with fishy odour
bacterial vaginosis
thick, white, cottage cheese discharge , itchiness
candida albicans
high vaginal swab
