Feline URT infections (cat flu) Flashcards
How do herpes virus and calicivirus differ in terms of clinical signs and severity?
Herpes virus - sicker (lethargic), more oculonasal discharge/eye disease
Calicivirus - ulcers and stomatitis
A cat presents with lethargy, sneezing, oculonasal discharge, conjunctivitis, hypersalivation, dyspnoea and coughing. What is your most likely diagnosis?
Feline herpes virus
What is the treatment for feline herpes virus, including eye disease?
Topical ganciclovir and hyaluronate for eyes
Systemic famciclovir
A cat presents with pyrexia, oral ulceration, oronasal discharge, pneumonia, shifting lameness and chronic stomatitis. What is your most likely diagnosis?
Feline calicivirus
What is lameness syndrome?
Shifting lameness
Seen in young cats with pyrexia and respiratory disease
(feline calicivirus)
How are feline calicivirus and herpesvirus diagnosed?
PCR
Serology
Virus isolation (OP swab - long)
How are feline calicivirus and herpesvirus prevented?
Vaccine (Ducat)
Reduces severity, doesn’t prevent infection
What is the treatment for feline calicivirus?
Most self-cure
Shed virus afterwards for 30 days to life but clinically normal
Name 2 bacteria that can cause cat flu or URT disease
Bordetella bronchiseptica
Chlamydophila felis - more eyse affected?
How is Bordetella bronchiseptica diagnosed?
Oropharyngeal/nasal swab
Culture
How is Chlamydophila felis diagnosed?
PCR
How is Chlamydophila felis treated?
Systemic doxycyline
