Feline retroviruses (FeLV, FIV) Flashcards
There are 3 subtypes of Feline Leukaemia virus (FeLV), type A, B and C. Which is the only one that is transmissible?
Type A
What are the clinical signs of FeLV?
Leukaemia
Lymphoma
Immunosuppression (FeLV-FAIDs)
Reproductive failure (crosses placenta)
What are the two types of FeLV related anaemia?
Primary anaemia - non-regenerative
Secondary anaemia - regenerative
Feline sarcoma virus causes multiple nodular, ulcerative skin lesions which may be metastatic. All of these young cats are positive for which virus?
FeLV
How often is the FeLV vaccine given?
At both kitten vaccine and first year booster
Then every 3 years
FIV in cats is more common in what age and sex?
Male cats
>5 y/o
What is the treatment for FeLV in cats?
Supportive - no specific antivirals
Interferon may prolong survival?
Cytotoxic drugs for lymphoma
How is FIV spread in cats?
Biting - saliva
Also transplacental and milk
Cats with FIV remain clinically healthy for 3-5 years, sometimes life. What is the treatment?
Supportive
How is FIV prevented and controlled?
NO VACCINE
Neuter cats to prevent fighting
Isolate infected cats - indoors only
Why is FIV antibody testing in kittens of a queen with FIV not reliable?
Test antibody positive as receives MDA from FIV
However likely to be uninfected
When checking for FeLV and FIV, should you check for the antigen or the antibody?
FeLV - antigen as most cats vaccinated, exposed and recovered or latent
FIV - antibody as no vaccine (only test kittens of positive queen once MDA has worn off)
What vaccines make up Ducat?
Feline calicivirus
Feline herpes virus
What vaccines make up Tricat?
Feline calici virus
Feline herpes virus
Feline panleukopenia/feline parvo/feline infectious enteritis
Does FeLV and FIV affect friendly cats are fighting cats?
FeLV - friendly, multi-cat household
FIV - fighting cats, spread through bites
