Breast Milk
Due to minimal antigen load and benefits of diversifying the chid’s gut flora.
Why is cow’s milk unsuitable for newborns? [1]
No Iron
What feeds are available for babies with cow’s milk protein allergy? [2]
1o - Hydrolysed protein feeds (Aptamil)
2o - Amino acid based feeds
What is lactose intolerance? [1]
What there are reduced levels of LACTASE, therefore the child cannot digest milk properly.
Which children are more susceptible to lactose intolerance? [3]
- Breast fed babies (minor)
- Post-gastroenteritis
- In some ethnicities, post-weaning
What is secondary lacose intolerance?
A short lived condition that arises post-gastroenteritis.
When is soya milk use suggested for feeding? [3]
- For vegan families who don’t breast-feed
- When a child has a milk allergy and hydrolysed milk is refused
- Consider for children still on a milk-free diet after 12 months
When does weaning start?
At 5 / 6 months
What is weaning?
When a child transitions from milk ot a mixed diet.
What can children eat at 5 months? (n.b. that have no teeth)
Puréed foods (veg, fruit and meat)
Soft cereal
When can a child start eating solids/finger foods?
At 6/7 months

At 7 months
