feedback Flashcards
Experiment with the tubes: Which one would fall the fastest/slowest in copper, plastic or copper with cut?
- The magnet with the copper tube would take the longest
Why does the magnet experience slowness in the copper tube?
The magnet falls through the copper tube it will experience an increase in flux just below the magnet and a decrease in flux just above the magnet
As the magnet falls, what is induced?
Eddy currents (horizontally), where the eddy currents will swirl in a direction that creates a magnetic field directed upwards below the magnet and a magnetic field directed downwards above the magnet by Lenz’s law.
What effect would be produced when the magnet is in the tube?
The flux repels the magnet’s North pole upwards, and also attracts the magnet’s south pole upwards as it falls which will slow down
Will plastic be conductive?
No because it is not conductive, so eddy currents can not induced.
Why will the slit in the copper tube not induce eddy currents?
It will induce currents but not large eddy currents will be formed.
Will the magnets take the exact same time for them to fall?
The magnets will take approx. the equal times to fall through the plastic tube and copper tube with the accelerating at 9.8m/s^2.
