Describe “LAND 3”:

A
  • Three Autopilots engaged and operating normally for an automatic landing. (FAIL OPERATIONAL)

What are the Autothrottle Modes on the FMA?

A

A/T Modes on the FMA:

  • SPD
    – Control Thrust to maintain Speed
  • IDLE
    – Is reducing or has reduced to idle
    – May engage in a VNAV descent… will after FLARE
  • THR HOLD
    – Thrust levers remain in existing position
    or where manually placed
  • N1
    – Autothrottle controls to the selected N1 thrust.
  • FLCH

climb, and to a minimum thrust during descent.
  • GA
    – Autothrottle controlling to a max thrust to maintain
a cilmb rate of >/= 2000 fpm. If both FDs and AP

within 120 degrees of localizer course.
  • B/CRS
    – Similar to LOC, except tracks on the inbound
    course

    – Annunciates after switching a FD switch on
after both FD switches were off.
    – TO roll and pitch guidance become active
    upon liftoff
  • GA
    – Arms in flight with flaps out of “UP” or with
    glidscope capture

(although the ref thrust changes to
    “GA” (N1 guage)
  • ROLLOUT
    – Displayed below 1500’ radio altitude
    – Activates at 5’ radio altitude

What are the Pitch modes on the FMA?

A

FMA Pitch modes:

  • TO
  • GA
  • VNAV SPD
  • VNAV PTH
  • VNAV ALT
  • V/S
  • ALT CAP
  • ALT HOLD
  • G/S
  • FLARE
28
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “TO” on the FMA:

A
  • Activated on the ground by turning either FD switch on.
  • Provides a 8 degree pitch on the FD pitch bar.
  • After T/O, AFDS commands a pitch attitude to
    maintain greater of V2 + 15 or liftoff speed + 15.
    – If current airspeed remains above target speed for
5 seconds, target resets to current speed, up to a
    max of V2 + 25 kts.
29
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “GA” on the FMA:

A
  • After reference thrust changes from T/O to CLIMB, GA arms whenever flaps are out of “UP”, or the glide slope captures.
  • GA displays on the Primary EICAS display N1 area.
  • When a GA is initiated, the target speed is the IAS/MACH window speed or current airspeed, whichever is higher.
  • If speed increases and remains above the initial target airspeed for 5 seconds, target airspeed resets to current airspeed to a max of IAS/MACH window + 25 kts.
  • If airspeed at initiationo f go-around is > IAS/MACH window + 25 kts, that speed is maintained.
30
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “VNAV SPD” (in white) on the FMA:

A

When initially pushing the VNAV switch on the MCP, VNAV provides pitch commands to maintain the FMC computed airspeed path.

31
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “VNAV SPD” (in green) on the FMA:

A
  • When VNAV SPD is green, (active) the AFDS maintains the CDU Climb/Descent speed or the speed displayed on the PFD.
32
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “VNAV PTH” on the FMA:

A
  • The AFDS maintains FMC altitude or descent path using pitch commands. For unintered headwinds, thrust may increase to maintain the VNAV path.
33
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “VNAV ALT” on the FMA:

A
  • VNAV ALT displays when there is a conflict between the MPC selected altitude and the descent profile altitude. Such as, when you cross the descent point and the MCP altitude is still set at cruise altitude.
34
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “VS” on the FMA:

A

Pressing the V/S button opens the V/S window, as well as the IAS/MACH window.

35
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “ALT CAP” on the FMA:

A

A transition interval change when reaching MCP altitude from V/S, FLCH, or VNAV climb or descent.

36
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “G/S” (green) on the FMA:

A

The AFDS is following the ILS Glide Slope.

37
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “FLARE” on the FMA:

A

Armed with autoland. Displays below 1500’ radio altitude. Activates during autoland at 45’ radio altitude. Deactivates at touchdown, allowing the nose to smoothly lower to the runway.

38
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Explain Pitch mode “FLARE” on the FMA:

A
  • Armed with autoland. (When “Land 3” or “Land 2”
    annunciates.)
  • Displays below 1500’ radio altitude.
  • Activates during autoland at 45’ radio altitude.
  • Autothrottle retards to Idle at 15’ radio altitude.
  • Idle replaces speed autothrottle mode annunciation.
  • Wings leveled when rollout mode engaged.
  • APs start lowering nose wheel to runway at five feet
radio altitude plus two seconds with pitch attitude
    less than two degrees.
  • Deactivates at touchdown, allowing the nose
to smoothly lower to the runway.
39
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

(T/F): TO is a Flight Directory only function and can only be engaged on the ground.

A

True

40
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

How do you know your Flight Director and TO mode have been turned on/activated?

A

TO TO in the Pitch and Roll windows of the FMA and “FLT DIR” displayed just below the FMA on the PFD.

41
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

Describe the displays and TO mode process during takeoff, prior to 80 knots:

A

TO mode, prior to 80 knots:

  • Pitch command = 8 degrees up.
  • Roll command = wings level
  • Autothrottle engaged by Capt pressing THR switch.
  • Thrust levers auto advance to selected TO power.
  • FMAs display:
      • N1 for Autothrottle mode
      • TO for Pitch mode
      • TO for Roll mode
42
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

What happens in TO mode at 80 knots?

Autothrottle mode annunciation changes from “N1” to “THR HLD” on the FMA.

43
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

What transpires during lift-off in TO mode?

A

TO mode at lift-off:

  • Pitch command greater of V2+15 or liftoff speed +15.
  • If Eng Fail on ground, target speed is V2 or airspeed
    at liftoff, whichever is greater.
  • Roll command maintains ground track.
44
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

What transpires after lift-off in TO mode?

A

TO mode after lift-off:

  • FD TO modes terminated by:
    – Engaging an A/P in CMD
    or……
    – Selecting any other pitch mode
  • A/T remains in THR HLD until one of these:
    – A pitch mode selected
    – A A/T mode is selected
    – A thrust reference mode is selected
…. A/T then sets climb thrust or selected ref thrust
45
Q

FedEx 767 - Autoflight

How can you ensure the most economical flying in the 767?
