What is federalism?
Theory of government where political power divided between national and state government.
What is limited government?
Scope of federal government should be limited to common good of people
What are the powers of the federal government?
Maintain armed forces, establish laws of immigration and citizenship
What are the powers shared between federal and state government?
Provide for general warfare, establish criminal justice system
Levy taxes
Charter banks
What are the powers of the state government?
Establish school and local government
Determine the structure of state government and regulation for marriage and divorce
What is dual federalism?
2 independent seperate levels of government, state and federal government
How would dual federalism work?
Government give states grants to spend.
The state is powerful.
Federal government intervene on issues with war, peace and money
What is cooperative federalism?
Federal goverment gets bigger and more powerful
How would cooperative federalism?
More government departments, increase in grants for state, more government departments for health and education
What is New federalism?
Demonstrated by Nixon- return of certain powers from federal government to state
How would new federalism work?
Shift back to state power- federal goverment cannot creates states but rather the other way around
