Federalism:
system of government in which sovereignty is divided between 1 central government and 2 or more regional governments. levels operate within own sovereign spheres
Coordinate/dual federalism
system in which the 2 levels of government work independently within own spheres of power. It requires only weak institutions of federalism where the 2 levels come together to coordinate their relatively autonomous operations
Cooperative federalism
: A federal system in which the two levels of government work together to achieve outcomes. it requires strong institutions of federalism where the two lwvels come together to cooperate
Coercive federalism:
A federal system in which the central government possesses and exercises more power than the regional governments. Australian federalism can be coercive when the Commonwealth uses its legislative and financial powers to direct state policy in areas of residual powers
