Retell the story of the man with the evil spirit
-In the synagogue in Capernaum, Jesus began to teach on the sabbath.
-They were amazed because he taught them with “authority”, unlike the teachers of law.
-A man with an evil spirit came into the synagogue and said “what do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are you are gods holy messenger”
-Jesus ordered the spirit to “be quiet and come out of the man!”
- The evil sprit shook him hard, screamed and came out of the man.
- They were amazed at Jesus’ new teaching and his power over evil spirits
- The news spread over Galilee.
What is the meaning of the story ‘A man with an evil spirit’
- it was accepted at the time of Jesus that there was millions of evil spirits in the world and it was thought that these spirits could possess people and cause mental & physical illness.
-Jesus spoke to the spirit not the man. The evil spirit recognises Jesus as the messiah using the title “gods holy messenger”. People was impressed by his authority over spirits and demons.
It shows that he is gods son as he is able to heal the man , evil spirit or illness it is a miracle.
What is the significance of the story “a man with an evil spirit”
- This story shows us Jesus’ compassion towards healing people. He saves people from SINS, SUFFERING and SPIRITS.
- The Jews believed that when the messiah arrived,he would destroy evil spirits and demons.
- By simply using words, Jesus is able to drive the evil spirit out from the man. By driving out the spirit Jesus shows he has authority over evil. Through Jesus, god conquers evil.
- The evil spirit recognised who Jesus was unlike the crowd. At this point in ministry Jesus wasn’t ready to let the world know that he was the messiah.
Retell the story ‘Jesus heals the boy with an evil spirit”
-Teachers of law and disciples were arguing. Jesus asked them what they were arguing about.
- A man in the crowd said “teacher I brought my son, because he has an evil spirit in him. Whenever it attacks he foams at is mouth, grits his teeth and becomes stiff. Your disciples could not drive the spirit out.”
- Jesus said “How unbelieving are you! Bring the boy to me!”
- As soon as the spirit saw Jesus it threw the boy into a fit. “How long has he been like this?’ Asked Jesus. The man replied “since childhood, help us if you possibly can”
- “Yes, everything is possible for a person with faith” said Jesus.
- The father cried out “I do have faith! Help me have more!”
- Jesus commanded the spirit to come out of the boy.
- The spirit screamed, threw the boy into a fit and came out.
- Everyone said “he is dead!” But Jesus took the boy by the hand and helped him stand.
- The disciples then asked Jesus “why could we not drive the spirit out?” Jesus answered “Only prayer can drive this kind out.”

- The healing of Simon’s mother in law took place on the sabbath so Jesus is breaking Jewish law that said no work on the sabbath.
- Jesus was willing to help people before the strict regulations of the Jewish law.
- NO WORK…cooking, driving, shopping or using electrical appliances.
What I the significance of “Jesus Heals many?”
- the Jewish leaders believed that Jesus healing on the sabbath was breaking the law of the Ten Commandments.
- Jesus disagreed with the Jewish leaders because they had too many rules protecting the law.
- Jesus could have waited until after the sabbath to heal but he wanted them to look at the law differently. The Ten Commandments were about loving god and loving your neighbour not about keeping rules.
- Simons mother in law immediately began to wait on them. This shows the speed of her cure. Christians today should use peters mother in law as an example today. She was very grateful when Jesus cured her and showed her gratitude by waiting on Jesus. We should be grateful today for all that Jesus does for us when he helps us with our problems in life and answers our prayers.
