Feasibility Flashcards
What is feasibility?
- whether a reaction is able to happen and is feasible
What is gibbs free energy?
- the overall change in energy in a chemical reaction
What is gibbs free energy equation?
G = change in H - change in S x temperature(K)
When is a reaction feasible?
when gibbs free energy is negative, a reaction is feasible
How do you find the minimum temperature at which a reaction is feasible?
T = Delta H/change in entropy
Convert K to celcius if required
Delta H = negative
Delta S = positive
T = High or Low
entropy = negative
Yes, feasible
Delta H = positive
Delta S = negative
T = High or Low
entropy = positive
No, not feasible
Delta H = negative
Delta S = negative
T = High
entropy = positive
No, not feasible
Delta H = negative
Delta S = negative
T = Low
entropy = negative
yes, feasible
Delta H = positive
Delta S = positive
T = low
entropy = positive
no
Delta H = positive
Delta S = positive
T = high
entropy = negative
yes
What is feasibility dependent on?
The balance between delta H and delta S
What are the limitations in entropy?
Although entropy may be negative, and the reaction is meant to be feasible the rate of reaction may be too slow due to infrequent collisions and kinetics.
