Entropy Flashcards
1
Q
What is entropy?
A
- The dispersal of energy within chemicals making up a chemical system
- the greater the entropy, the greater the disperse of energy and the greater the disorder in a system
2
Q
What are the units of entropy?
A
JK-1mol-1
3
Q
How does entropy change from solid, liquid and gas.
A
- solids have the smallest entropies, liquids have greater entropies and gasses have the greatest entropies
- increase in randomness, increase in dispersion and therefore greater entropy
4
Q
How does entropy change with the number of gaseous molecules?
A
- the more gaseous products, the increase in the spread of energy and therefore the greater the entropy
5
Q
How do you calculate change in S
A
Products - reactants
- always positive
